Millennium Project

The Dry Stone Walling Association, its branches and the National Stone Centre worked together to enable the building work to be carried out during the period of 29th April -1st May 2000.  Local branches provided teams of men and women to build each section of wall and DSWA corporate members had been approached to assist with the project.  Each section of wall required up to ten tonnes of good quality stone to enable the craftsmen and women to show the stone and style of walling at its very best.

None of the work could have been fulfilled without the goodwill and time of a large number of Britain’s skilled craftsmen and women, the support of quarries in the provision of stone, and outside finance to meet the expenses of bringing these together at one site for one period of time.  During the weekend there was an exhibition showing dry stone walling from within the UK and overseas as well as workshops for visiting cub scout groups, a wall blessing on the Sunday and a walling competition.

The Millennium Wall forms a permanent exhibit at the National Stone Centre's much-visited open-air site where it is used as part of the educational programme offered by the Centre.
